Before you wash a plush sleep toy

If your plush sleep toy includes a white noise machine, battery pack or sound box, remove it before washing. This is essential. Electronics and water do not mix, and leaving a sound box inside can damage the unit and the toy. Check inside the pocket for any extra components, such as batteries, before closing the opening securely.
It also helps to give the toy a quick shake outside to remove loose crumbs, dust or sand. For everyday marks, you may not need to wash the whole toy at all. Spot cleaning is often enough and is gentler on delicate fabrics.
How to wash plush sleep toys in the washing machine
Many modern plush toys are designed to be machine washable, but only wash them this way if the care label says you can. Give the toy a gentle squeeze in thicker areas before reassembling it. If it still feels cool, heavy or damp, allow more drying time.
A tumble dryer can be suitable only when the care label allows it. If so, use the lowest heat setting and place the toy in a laundry bag or pillowcase. Check it regularly. When in doubt, skip the dryer and air dry instead.
How often should you wash a child’s sleep toy?
There is no single timetable for every family. A toy that stays at home and is mostly used for bedtime may only need a full wash every few weeks or when visibly dirty. A toy that travels to daycare, the park, the pram and grandparents’ house will likely need more frequent cleaning.
Spot clean dribble, food marks and small spills as they happen. A regular full wash can be helpful after illness, nappy leaks, a particularly grubby outing or when the toy starts to smell less than fresh.
